Partial or complete?
- Partial dentures replace some missing teeth. Small clasps hold them to the teeth you still have.
- Complete dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Upper dentures usually have better stability because they form a seal against the roof of the mouth. Lower dentures are generally less stable and can take longer to get used to.
Looking after your dentures
- Take them out and brush them every day with a soft brush. Toothpaste is too abrasive for them. Use a denture-cleaning product according to its instructions.
- Clean them over a bowl of water or a folded towel, so they don’t break if you drop them.
- Brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth as well.
- Never use hot water, which can warp the plastic.
- Regular dental checks are still important, even with full dentures, so the fit can be checked and the gums and mouth examined.
What happens, visit by visit
-
Step 1: Impressions
We take impressions of your mouth: a quick one first, then a more precise one in a tray made for you.
-
Step 2: Bite and teeth
We record how your jaws meet and choose the size, shape and shade of the teeth.
-
Step 3: Try-in
You try the teeth set in wax, so you can see how they look and we can check the bite before anything is final.
-
Step 4: Fitting and adjusting
The finished denture is fitted. Sore spots are common in the first few weeks and can usually be adjusted at follow-up visits.

Questions
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
Most people need a few weeks. Speech usually settles within days; eating takes longer. Start with soft food cut into small pieces, and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture steady.
Should I sleep in my dentures?
It is better to take them out at night. Removing them gives the tissues underneath a chance to rest and reduces the risk of irritation and fungal infection. Keep them in water or an appropriate denture solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can dentures be fixed in place?
Implants can be used to improve the stability of a denture, particularly a lower denture. Implant placement is a separate procedure and may require referral to a specialist.
My old denture has become loose. Can it be fixed?
Often, yes. Gums and bone shrink over time, so a denture that once fitted well can work loose. A reline refits the base to your gums; sometimes a new denture is the better option.
